Winning Essay
Congratulations to Kerrie H. of Anaconda, Montana, who won $100 US retail in Close To My Heart product credit! Here is her winning essay:

My favorite journal has been my journey through cancer. I was diagnosed with breast cancer about this time last year. I had a mastectomy and had to have eight sessions of chemo and 44 sessions of radiation.

My cousin is a Consultant with Close To My Heart. When she found out that I had cancer, she suggested I journal and scrap my journey. At first I thought it was a morbid idea, but she started a book for me and mailed it. She asked each of my family members to send a picture and something they had written, and then filled the first part of the book with their messages. She left many pages blank for me to scrap and journal. I have pages with pictures of the oncology and radiology crews, including pictures of those who supported me and cheered me on.

It has been a wonderful journey and I can look at my scrapbook with fond memories. I am now cancer free, but I am still adding to the book when something important happens

Helpful Hints

To re-create the cards shown here, follow these helpful hints and the Pretty Simple pattern as outlined on page 116 of our how-to book Originals Card Confidence Program. For more detailed information on how to assemble the featured cards or to purchase a copy of Originals, contact your Close To My Heart Consultant.

Note: Save all the portions of the cut paper until you have finished all of the cutting.

  • Cut 10 sheets of cardstock and 5 sheets of B&T Duos paper as follows:
    • Trim 3 1/2” from one side of the 12” x 12” paper, creating 12” x 8 1/2” pieces.
    • Trim 1” from one 8 1/2” side of each of the 12” x 8 1/2” papers, creating fifteen 11” x 8 1/2” pieces.
  • Cut all fifteen 11” x 8 1/2” pieces in half, creating thirty 5 1/2” x 8 1/2” pieces.
  • Fold the twenty 5 1/2” x 8 1/2” pieces of cardstock in half, creating twenty 5 1/2” x 4 1/4” card bases. Set aside.
  • Cut the ten 5 1/2” x 8 1/2” pieces of B&T paper in half, creating twenty 4 1/4” x 5 1/2” pieces. Set aside.
  • Choose six of the darkest 12” x 3 1/2” cardstock pieces and all five 12” x 3 1/2” pieces of B&T paper; cut as follows:
    • Trim 1 1/2” from one 12” edge, creating eleven 12” x 2” pieces.
    • Cut each 12” x 2” piece into two 2” x 4 1/4” pieces and two 2” x 1 1/4” pieces, creating a total of *twenty-two 2” x 4 1/4” pieces and *twenty-two 2” x 1 1/4” pieces. (*You will have two of each size as scrap.) Set aside.
  • Cut the remaining four 12” x 3 1/2” cardstock pieces as follows:
    • Trim 2 1/2” from one 12” edge, creating four 12” x 1” pieces.
    • Cut each strip into 1” x 1 3/4” pieces, creating a total of twenty pieces. Set aside. Note: this piece is not part of the Pretty Simple pattern in Originals. When assembling your cards, attach this piece to the center of piece C of the pattern.
  • Cut the four 12” x 2 1/2” cardstock pieces as follows:
    • Trim 1/2” from one long edge, creating four 12” x 2” pieces.
    • Cut each strip into 2” x 2” pieces, creating a total of twenty pieces. Set aside.
  • Attach the paper and embellish as desired.
